How to open a canvass project

Written by William Long

After a canvassing project is created on the desktop, it's ready to go in the Numinar mobile app. Here's how to knock your first door.

đŸ“± Download the Numinar app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.

Step 1: Open your project

On the Home screen, tap your canvassing project. Canvassing projects have an orange house icon.

Step 2: Find doors on the map

The map shows every household on your list. The top of the screen shows how many households are done.

  • Blue dots are doors you still need to knock.

  • Green dots are already done. An apartment building shares one dot, so tap it to see which units are left.

Tap a dot to see who lives there. Tap Open in Maps for directions (Apple Maps on iPhone, Google Maps on Android), or tap the household to start.

Step 3 (optional): Use the List

Prefer a list? Tap List at the bottom. Filter by street (1) or sort by house number (2) to plan your route. Households with a green check are done.

Step 4: Open a household

You'll see everyone in the household. Voters on your target list are grouped under In Target List, with their age, party, and voting history. Tap the map icon next to the address for directions.

Tap a voter's name to talk with them.

Step 5: Record the conversation

If the voter answers the door, tap Available (1) and tap their answer to each question (2).

At the bottom, add any Voter Notes, then tap Save.

If your project sends follow-up texts, you'll be asked whether to send one. Then you'll go back to the map or list you started from, and the household shows as done: a green dot on the map and a green check in the list.

No one home? Mark the whole household

On the household screen, tap Mark All Unavailable. Choose a reason (1), like Not Home, and tap Submit (2).

To mark just one voter, open them and tap Unavailable instead of Available.

On a voter's screen, tap Voter Info for their tags, party, demographics, and address, or Turnout for their voting history.

💬 Frequently Asked Questions

Can I canvass in areas with bad cell reception?

Yes! The app switches to offline mode automatically when you lose service. Your interactions are saved on your phone and uploaded once you're back online with the app open. See How to use offline mode.

Why is a dot on the map in the wrong spot?

This is a geocoding issue in the voter data. Numinar re-geocodes all the data from our data provider, but some addresses can still be off. Let us know and we'll make our provider aware!

I don't see my project. What do I do?

Make sure you're in the right organization (tap the menu in the top left of the Home screen). If you still don't see it, ask your organization's admin to check that the project is set to Todo or In Progress and that you're assigned to it. A project that was just created may still be loading, so check again in a few minutes.
