How to Create a Canvassing Project

Written by William Long

Once you have a canvassing list and a canvassing survey, the last step is bringing them together into a project. Remember: Project = List + Message (Survey), so make sure both are ready first.

💡 Canvassing projects are created on the desktop and used in the Numinar mobile app. Check out the Mobile collection for more on the app.

Step 1: Go to Projects and click New Project

In the left menu, click Projects (1), then click New Project (2).

Step 2: Name your project and choose Canvassing

Give your project a name your volunteers will recognize, then set Outreach Type to Canvassing.

Step 3: Fill out the project

Fill in each field from top to bottom:

  1. Survey: choose your canvassing survey or Conditional Survey.

  2. Follow-up Text (optional): send a text after a door knock. Choose Single Text to send the same text every time, or Per Disposition to send a different text for outcomes like Not Home or Refused. Follow-up texts need a verified texting number and follow the same pricing as normal texts. See our pricing and this demo.

  3. Voter List: choose your canvassing list.

  4. Geofences or Precincts: choose which areas to canvass. Each geofence or precinct becomes its own project. If your list has geofences, choose Split By Geofence or Split By Precinct first.

  5. Project Assignment: choose Public so anyone in your organization can canvass it, or Users/Teams to pick specific assignees. You can add or remove assignees later, but you can't switch between Public and Users/Teams after the project is created.

  6. Status: set to Todo when you're ready for volunteers to start.

✏️ Volunteers can't see Draft or Complete projects. Choose Draft if you want to review the project first, then switch it to Todo or In Progress. When canvassing is finished, set the status to Complete to hide it from volunteers.

Step 4: Choose your geofences

Click the Geofences field to pick which areas to canvass. Choose Select All to create a project for every geofence at once. Splitting by precinct works the same way, using the Precincts field.

Step 5: Click Create Project

Click Create Project. If you picked several geofences, the button reads "Create 2 Projects" (or however many you chose).

Step 6: Track your project's progress

Click any project in the list to open its details. The Progress bar shows how many doors have been knocked, broken down by Canvassed, Not Home, Refused and Other.

Step 7: Open the project in the Numinar mobile app

Your volunteers will now see the project on the Home screen of the Numinar app. See How to open a canvass project.

💬 Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't my volunteer see their canvassing project in the app?

Check that the status is Todo or In Progress, not Draft. If the project is assigned to Users/Teams, make sure the volunteer (or a team they're on) is an assignee. Also make sure they're logged in to the right organization in the app. A project that was just created may still be loading, so check again in a few minutes.

When I open the project in the app, the map shows the wrong area. Why?

This usually means your list doesn't have any voters, and the app shows a No Voters in Project message. Go back to your list and make sure voters were captured in your geofences and that the list was saved.

How do I download the Numinar mobile app?

Download the Numinar app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.
