Relational Organizing matches the personal phone contacts or location of a supporter with voters in your target universe, then prompts them with pre-written texts or canvass surveys. It means target voters hear your message from someone they know.
Remember, your organization's voter file is the underlying data set. A supporter's contacts will only match if they're in your state's voter file and on your list, and Contact Your Neighbors only shows voters on your list within 5 miles of the supporter.
Let's get started with these best practices!
Setting your organization public
A public organization lets supporters find you in the app and join on their own. In the left menu, click Settings (1), then the Organization tab (2).
Scroll down to Public Information:
Use the Description to say what your organization does and where your efforts are focused.
Check Make Org Public and click Save Changes.
Share your Join Org Link or its QR code. Anyone who opens it can download the app and join your organization in one step.
Here are some examples of a public description:
This organization is focused on efforts in Pennsylvania. Help your Friends, Family, and Neighbors vote!
We're a volunteer team helping voters across Naperville make a plan to vote. Join us to remind the people you know to vote this November!
Add social proof, like your website or donate page, in the description.
Add a profile picture in Organization Settings so supporters recognize you.
Remember, your contact email and phone number will be publicly available.
Selecting your target audience
Use a larger list instead of a smaller one to increase your match rate. See How to create a list for relational.
Avoid geofences on relational lists. They restrict the list and cut down on matches.
For Contact Your Neighbors, pick your list in Canvassing Nearby Voters Settings. If no list is selected, supporters will automatically be served voters modeled Strong GOP and Lean GOP (or registered Republicans, depending on your voter data).
Designing your messages
For relational texting projects, build a Text. Texts on Numinar support images and video under 525 KB.
For Contact Your Neighbors, build a Canvass Survey.
Send different messages to voters based on their tags by using Conditional Surveys or Conditional Texts.
Here's how: How to create messaging for relational organizing.
Managing your supporters
In the left menu, click Team (1) regularly to check for new supporters who joined through your public profile or Join Org Link.
Click Add Users (2) to invite people by email. See How to Add Team Members.
Consider adding new supporters to a "Relational Organizing Team" in Numinar.
Any supporter can be removed by clicking on their name, opening the ⋮ menu, and choosing Remove User.
Paying supporters per text (optional)
You can pay supporters for each contact they text. Paid relational needs to be turned on for your organization, so reach out to campaigns@numinar.com first. When you create a relational texting project, check Pay users per text (1), then set the Payment per Contact (2) and the Maximum Payout per User (3). A maximum of 0 means no limit.
Supporters see their earnings in the app and tap Cash out your earnings. Numinar emails them a link to upload screenshots of their texts, and their payment is sent by email once the screenshots are approved.
Seeing your results
Texts sent through relational texting projects are labeled Relational Texts on the Reports page. See How to see relational organizing results.
Consider making a specific Tag for your Relational Organizing surveys to better track those canvass interactions.
